________
Lecturer, Franny Mams King
Sewing, arts, crafts, and creatively thinking outside the “shoe box and pizza box” are in Franny’s genes! She is a third generation fiber artist. Her Grandmother “Nanny” Kisner from Pocahontas County and Mom, Polly, from Elkins inspired her to improvise and recycle. Franny completed every sewing project in 4-H starting at age 9 in Randolph County, WV. Her Mom kept her busy during childhood summers when she was recuperating from multiple orthopedic surgeries with art and fiber projects such as embroidery, knitting, crocheting, drawing, painting, basketmaking, and hand sewing.
During her undergraduate years at West Virginia University as an Elementary Education major with minors in Art Education and Early Childhood, she did alterations and made gowns for fellow students. She also made Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls to sell for spending money. Her first endeavors making quilts were a Lonestar pillow and wall hanging in 1976 (nothing simple, like a nine patch!).
After graduation, she shared her sewing talents as a volunteer Costumer for Showtimers Community Theatre in Roanoke, VA while teaching elementary school in the area. At WVU she was a Volunteer 4-H Leader teaching camp crafts at Jackson's Mill and founding member of the Campus Club quilting group.
Since retiring from WVU, she has made over 40 quilts for family and friends. She makes her home at “Chirp” in Waynesburg, PA with her husband Karl and her fur babies, Sparky and Lady Grace.
