Free Motion Quilting Basics on a Domestic Sewing Machine
Welcome to Domestic Machine Quilting
Taught By: Diane Henry (pictured right)

You’ve seen all of the wonderful machine quilting out there and you are ready to try it! This class will introduce you to the basics of basting the quilt, threading and tensioning the machine and setting it up to do free motion quilting. But the fun doesn’t stop with the mechanics! There will still be plenty of time for learning some basic free-motion quilting techniques and ways to manage the fullness of a large quilt in the throat space of a domestic machine. It’s what quilting for real is all about.

Topics include:
  • How to set up a domestic machine for quilting
  • How to use walking and darning feet
  • How to choose the right threads and needles
  • How to achieve good tension and even stitches
  • How to create a variety of creative machine quilting designs free-hand and using stencils. Basic ruler work will also be demonstrated (students are not required to bring rulers to class).

Diane Henry has been working with fabric since her grandmother taught her how to hand piece her first nine-patch at age four. A blue ribbon winning hand quilter, she discovered machine quilting in the late 1990's and has never looked back.

In 2007, Diane became a professional machine quilter using her domestic sewing machine. She purchased her first long-arm quilting machine in 2008. Diane loves sharing her passion for machine quilting with others around the world. She works with quilting groups and shops leading classes for beginners and advanced quilters and organizing workshops; conducts lectures, classes and demonstrations at quilt shows; and serves as one of the National Educators for Handi Quilter, Inc. and is a certified Threadologist for Superior Threads.

Diane lives in Northern Virginia with her husband, Terry and dachshunds, Senya and JJ.

Students will need to bring:
  • Full sized sewing machine in good working order (travel machines are not a great choice because their needle speed is slow). Preferably, the machine should be able to drop its feed dogs.
  • Free motion quilting/darning foot and walking foot
  • Size 90 Topstitch needles
  • Extension table to fit your machine. (I highly recommend having a good acrylic extension table for your machine).
  • 5 Fat quarter sized quilt sandwiches with muslin on top, batting and backing of student’s choice.
  • Light grey or tan quilting thread – size 50-60 weight cotton or polyester – (for example: So Fine, Bottom Line, Masterpiece, Mettler) for use in the top.   Please wind several bobbins before class to save time.
  • Scissors or snips.
  • Machingers, or machine quilting gloves.
  • Blue washout marking pens or Frixion pens.
Spring 2020 General Meeting Schedule & Information

The WVQI Spring Class and General Meeting will be held on the 24th and 25th of April, 2020.
On Friday, the class, Free Motion Quilting Basics on a Domestic Sewing Machine, with
instructor Diane Henry, will be held from 9am – 4pm, with a break for lunch at 12 noon. The
afternoon portion of the class will concentrate on various threads and how to use them in modern
machine quilting.

For those who require an overnight stay, there are hotel accommodations in Parkersburg. We
will start off with a lunch provided by the guild, Helping Hands of Belleville. These good
people will start our afternoon off right with a potluck meal from 12 noon – 1pm. Immediately
following the lunch, there will be a brief WVQI business meeting. After that, Friday’s
instructor, Diane Henry will give a lecture, “Threadology”, accompanied by a trunk show.

And of course, you can shop before or after the meeting (or both!) amongst all the goodies that
are on display at Bolts & Quarters. If you haven’t been to their new location yet, this is the
perfect time to come and see all the wonderful merchandise that Brian and Warren have on
display! Come join us for two days of learning, shopping, and networking with quilters from
around the area. We look forward to seeing you there.

There are many hotel options in the Parkersburg area. A few options closest to the Bolts & Quarters Quilt Shop are listed below:
