Homepage  Quilt Festival 2010 Special Exhibits
Marion County Reading Council
Children are definitely welcome at the 2010 Quilt Festival. A booth has been designed especially with them in mind. They may decide to create a craft by adding the finishing touches to a quilted bookmark, or they can travel on a scavenger hunt for fun and a prize. Students in Marion County completed assignments during the school year and want to share these projects that incorporated a “quilt motif” in many content area assignments. A booklet of quilt projects that can be completed at home will be available for children.

Children may choose to sit in front of giant storyboards that depict scenes from two different stories, and listen as individuals read from The Patchwork Quilt and Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt. A multitude of books will be available for purchase. One tells about a character named Sam who decides quilting would be fun and joins the lady folks and helps creates a “blue ribbon” quilt. Another book tells the story of how people used various symbols in their quilt designs which served as coded messages. Quilts would serve as maps and be placed over fences to help slaves on their journey to freedom.
Two lucky children will be the proud owners of antique children’s sewing machines if they take a chance and are raffle winners. The machines will not only be a fun toy, but will serve as an educational tool as well.

Bet you can’t wait to come to the Marion County Reading Council Booth to experience the many fun events all planned just with children in mind!
